ahimsa Essentials OM Whipped Body Butter Review + Coupon Code!

8/14/2017

cruelty free beauty body butter review
I met Sean and Queenie of ahimsa Essentials at SoCal VegFest in Orange County last October. Before I had even sampled any of their products, I knew this was going to be a special brand – just by how genuine and kind the two of them were.

A naturopathic doctor and an environmental engineer, they met during the Best Friends Animal Society’s Hurricane Katrina relief and later went on to launch ahimsa Essentials early in 2015. They dedicated their efforts to creating organic, all-natural, plant-based, cruelty-free products in an earth-friendly manner with no preservatives, synthetic fragrances, artificial ingredients or fillers. In fact, each of their handcrafted products has five ingredients or fewer, including essential oils blended with sustainable oils and butters.

Ahimsa is a Sanskrit word meaning non-violence, which they chose to express their mission to “cause no harm, do no harm in thoughts, words or actions to self, others, and the environment.”

All of their products are handmade in Phoenix using sustainable, plant-based, cruelty-free ingredients and are sold online, at farmers markets and festivals, and at local retailers in Arizona.

While they offer a full line of organic, vegan soaps, sugar scrubs, moisturizers, deodorants, bath bombs and more, this particular product review is for their Om Organic Whipped Body Butter.

Cruelty-Free, Vegan Beauty Product Review: Om Organic Whipped Body Butter

Most of you probably don’t know that I made and sold soaps, lotions, lip balms, bath bombs and other vegan personal care products crafted in my kitchen to help pay for my undergrad degree. The reason I bring it up now is just to show that I do know at least a little bit about handcrafting products and often think, “I could just make this at home,” when I see small-batch products at farmers markets or festivals. But I have to say, I would definitely have to do some research to even attempt to reproduce the absolutely heavenly, fluffy texture of this ahimsa Essentials whipped body butter.

This is, hands down, the most-decadent body butter I have ever used. It is easily a higher-quality and more luxurious product than more-expensive, vegan, organic body butters that I have found in well-known retailers made by well-known brands.

Every time I open the jar, it feels a bit like one of those products on which you decide to occasionally splurge, but it is surprisingly affordable and doesn’t have to be a splurge at all for most folks. At the time of this writing, their four-ounce body butters are just $12.95 on their website – plus, you get free shipping on orders of more than $50. (If you use the coupon code below, you will also get free shipping on orders of less than $50, plus you get 10% off your order!)

ahimsa Essentials cruelty free skincare products
I am actually quite surprised that it is this affordable, particularly when you consider the quality of the ingredients and care that goes into each handcrafted batch. Of course, you can find cheaper body butters and even cheap vegan body butters, but take a look at the ingredients list on those products or do a little research on the company making them, and I think you will see that the value just isn’t there. Plus, when you purchase from a company like ahimsa Essentials, you have the opportunity to support not only a small, local business, but a family business and a woman-owned business. Those are total pluses in my book.

So, if you noticed that I mentioned I met them last October, you might wonder why I’m only now doing this product review. There are a couple of reasons, one of which is that I reviewed another body butter a while ago and wanted to make sure I had plenty of space and blog posts between the two in order to be fair to both brands. The second reason is that I immediately fell in love with this product the first time I opened the jar, and I just had to be sure that it was going to retain its fragrance, texture and consistency over time and with varying temperatures.

Ten months after receiving it, I can safely say that the fragrance and fluffiness are fully intact and just as enjoyable now as they were the first day.

Om Organic Whipped Body Butter
I can also say that I love traveling with my ahimsa Essentials vegan, organic body butter. It is so nice to have with me after hours on a plane or train. When you travel a lot and like to travel light, it is important to have products that can serve more than one purpose. In the case of this whipped body butter made with food-grade ingredients, you can get four uses out of it: hand lotion, lip balm, facial moisturizer and your slightly heavier butter for things like elbows and heels. While the four-ounce jar is just a bit too large for TSA to allow it in your carry-on, it is easy to scoop out into a travel-size container when flying is part of your trip itinerary.

The variety that I tried for this product review was the Om Body Butter, which is described on the website as a scent “dominated by Egyptian Rose Geranium with hints of Orange and Juniper Berry.” They report that it is their most popular scent with women, and I can see why. It is quite delightful, and I have definitely noticed myself holding my hand under my nose several times after application to breathe in the delicate, floral scent for a little aromatherapy.

Aside from Om, you can also choose ahimsa Essentials organic body butters in Rescue (rosemary + wintergreen), Sublime (key lime + bergamot), Zen (lavender + mint), Bliss (frankincense + clove), Glow (grapefruit + basil) or Pure (no essential oils added).

I definitely want to try Sublime and Glow, so I’m pretty sure those are the first two things I am going to order with the coupon code!

By the way – and I’m sure this won’t surprise you – each of their body butters comes in a recycled glass jar that is completely recyclable (although, I think I might reuse mine to hold small findings in my craft room).

Cyber Monday Deals for Eco, Green, Vegan People: Solar Charger, LifeStraw, Yoga Kit, Food Storage and More!

11/27/2016

Okay, my fellow cheap chickadees, I have found us some Cyber Monday deals on some super-cool stuff!

From the looks of things, most of them are right about 30% off of the regular price, which is a pretty good deal, particularly for things that are difficult to find on sale elsewhere.

This first one is the LifeStraw personal water filter. We already have one of these that we bought last year. We are going to buy at least one more at this great price!
Next up is this portable solar charger with two USB ports. You know we love a road trip and we love all things solar panel, so I ordered this one last night. Now I'm wondering if I should order another one before this deal disappears!
This is not the food sealer that I have, but I can tell you that I do not know how I ever lived without mine. If you are new to vacuum sealing and the high-priced machines have been scaring you off, now is the time to give it a try! Using a sealer is a great way to extend the life of your produce, so don't pass up this vacuum sealer deal!
Speaking of extending the life of your produce...you can reduce your food waste by switching to produce storage containers like these...
And, finally, I saw this yoga kit and thought it would be the perfect gift for someone just getting into yoga. If you know anyone like that (or are just getting into yoga yourself), you might want to grab this kit while it is a Cyber Monday deal!
These are just a handful of Amazon Cyber Monday deals I found that I thought you might like. There are hundreds more, so make sure you look around while you are there!

Cruelty-Free Vegan Purse Review and Promo Code: Mechaly Macie Vegan Leather Weekender @mechalyshop #crueltyfree #veganpurse #vegan

3/20/2016

Mechaly Vegan Leather Purse
Okay, I have been testing my Mechaly Macie Black Vegan Leather Weekender Handbag for about five weeks now and am ready to post my review!

I  have found that it can be difficult to find purses that are vegan, stylish and sturdy. You can usually pick two out of three of these traits, but finding handbags with all three of these qualities sometimes seems next to impossible. There are a few good companies out there providing fashionable, functional bags that are cruelty free, and I am here to tell you that it is now time for us to add Mechaly to that list.

Honestly, I hadn't heard of Mechaly before they contacted me with the opportunity to review one of their bags. But I am always excited to learn about a new vegan company, and now I am particularly glad to have had the chance!

You don't have to be vegan to appreciate a high-quality, cruelty-free handbag, but far too many ethical shoppers have learned the hard way that cruelty free does not always mean vegan. So you will be happy to hear that Mechaly is not just committed to being cruelty free; they are also certified vegan by Vegan.org and PETA.
Mechaly Skully Collection
As I mentioned in the previous blog post giving you a sneak peek at the vegan handbag review I had in the works, when Mechaly approached me with the opportunity to review one of their bags, I was immediately drawn to the Macie Black Vegan Leather Weekender Handbag.

Most of my days are pretty busy and I am often running all over the county, which means I usually have a lot of stuff to pack in the morning that I will need throughout the day. So, while I was pretty tempted by their skull collection, I figured their roomy Weekender was the perfect bag for me to review.

In the previous post, I also mentioned that I immediately put the bag to the test on the first day with a bag of 12 oranges, two boxes of granola bars, a sweater, my day planner, a notebook, a pair of flip flops, two water bottles and my travel tea mug. The best part is that I still had room to spare!

The next day, I didn't have the granola bars, but I did have another bag of oranges -- plus my insulated lunch bag. Rather than having my purse, a tote bag and my lunch bag all looped over my arm, and then piled in my passenger seat, I was able to fit everything in the Weekender, which was way more convenient and definitely more fashionable.

And I think this is where this particular vegan leather handbag really stands out. After all, we can all find some huge, handy tote bag that we can stuff with everything we need for the day, but the Weekender allows you to tote an abundance of necessities in style.
Mechaly Weekender Cruelty Free

Vegan Handbag Review: Uses for the Weekender

This bag could definitely be used a school bag, work bag or gym bag with no problem. You could pack for a long weekend with room to spare, and experienced packers could probably pack for a week-long vacation.

While I have been mostly using this as a work bag -- and it has really worked out nicely for this -- this has become my go-to bag for just about everything. Need to quickly pack for an impromptu road trip? Grab the Weekender. Need to transport four bottles of wine, a water bottle and a sweater for a night out? I did, and I grabbed my Weekender. Need to pack for a day on campus followed by date night? Grab the Weekender and go.

Aside from oranges, work stuff and wine, I have used my Weekender to tote birthday gifts, groceries, dog park supplies, light bulbs, archery gear, my laptop, smudging supplies, and various bits of hardware and home goods for clients.

Speaking of which, I'm pretty sure I know the burning question that is on your mind at this point. I can hear you saying, "Sure, AJ, it carries produce, school books and work stuff, but will it fit a toilet seat? And not one of those short, round ones...we're talking one of those long, oval ones?"

Well, my friends, I too had this question...and the answer is yes. So if your day ever comes to the point where you need to transport a long, oval toilet seat from one client's house to another, and you would prefer to do so discretely so that other clients do not feel compelled to inquire why you have a toilet seat riding shotgun, the Weekender has your back.

I even took a picture of it for you...
Big Vegan Handbag

Cruelty-Free Purse Review: Quality and Features

Now that we have established the roominess of the Weekender, let's talk quality and other features.

One of the first things that I noticed about the bag is that it is unbranded. I get that some fashionistas may not like this and prefer to display their favorite designers' logos as they go about their day. For those of you who like branded bags, Mechaly does offer some, including the Lainie Satchel Handbag, the Kaylee Vegan Leather Tote and the Jaime Backpack. Their super-popular Skully line is also very distinctive.

I, on the other hand, prefer unbranded bags or bags with subtle branding. So I love that Mechaly has both unbranded and subtly branded options.

Next, let's talk vegan leather. You and I both know that all vegan leather is not created equally. Other things that are not created equally include zippers, D rings, hooks and all of those other findings that tend to fall apart on lower-quality vegan purses. The cruelty-free, leather-like material used to make the Weekender looks and feels like a high-quality leather alternative. Plus, I used the Weekender pretty hard for the last five weeks, and all of the mechanics have held up perfectly.

There are two handy, zippered exterior pockets that are perfect for car keys, protein bars or pens, and the removable strap that comes with it allows you to go through your day hands free while wearing it as a shoulder bag or cross body. This adds to the versatility of the Weekender, which is definitely one of the reasons that I really love this bag and have been able to find so many uses for it.

About Mechaly

Of course, for most vegan folks and others dedicated to ethical shopping practices, the company is just as important as the product. So here is a little bit about the vegan awesomeness of Mechaly...

The Mechaly brand was born from the founders' desire to blend their love of fashion with their dedication to social action. To this end, their line of edgy vegan leather purses and accessories are designed for people who are always on the go and always on the hunt for high-quality accessories that are stylish and comfortable, as well as cruelty free and socially responsible.

Mechaly is a family-owned company started by French designers in Beverly Hills. Closely connected to their heritage and tradition, the founders named the company after the surname of their maternal lineage and determined the company's founding principles based on those instilled in them by their grandfather in their youth. Among these are respecting all living things, cherishing good health and treasuring each day we are given.

At the heart of the Mechaly brand is a focus on nine basics:

  • Design
  • Fashion
  • The Environment
  • Social Responsibility
  • Excellence
  • Inclusiveness
  • Integrity
  • Authenticity
  • Being a Voice for Animals

The bottom line is that Mechaly is a brand worth getting to know. From my experience with them, I have found that they are great people making great products that are fashionable, functional and cruelty free.

Sneak Peek at the Cruelty-Free, Certified Vegan Mechaly Handbag I'm Reviewing! @mechalyshop #goveg #govegan

Vegan Purse by Mechaly
A longer post is in the works, but I just couldn't wait to share at least a little sneak peek at this cruelty-free bag by Mechaly that I am in the process of reviewing.

When Mechaly approached me to review one of their bags and said that I could choose a vegan purse from their line to review, I immediately went for the Macie Black Vegan Leather Weekender Handbag.

I'm a busy girl, and sometimes I spend the entire day running all over the county, so I figured this made me a good candidate for reviewing this particular bag with all of its roomy awesomeness.

And roomy it is! On day one, I fit a bag of 12 oranges, two boxes of granola bars, a sweater, my day planner, a notebook, a pair of flip flops, two water bottles and my travel tea mug in my Weekender with room to spare.

While that might make it sound like a huge bag, it really does not feel that way. I think the pictures in this post do a pretty good job of showing that it is about the size of the larger handbags a lot of people carry.

If you want to check out their line of handbags, wallets and backpacks certified vegan by Vegan.org and PETA before I post my full review, go to the Mechaly website. If you happen to fall in love while you are there, use promo code SHOP35 for 35% off and free shipping!

Stay tuned for my full vegan product review after I've been putting this cruelty-free purse to the test for a couple of weeks!

Try Fair Trade, Vegan Condoms for Just $2!

2/3/2015

While I was checking out the Abe's Market Try for $2 page this morning, I came across these Sustain condoms that I thought might be of interest to some of you. After all, Valentine's Day is coming up, and it seems like it might be a good idea to have some fair trade, vegan condoms on hand in case you get lucky!

Sustain condoms are fair trade, vegan, sustainably made, fragrance free, dye free, nitrosamines free (I don't even know what that is, but it sounds like we should be glad they aren't in there) and delivered to you in recycled packaging. That sounds pretty darn responsible for a company helping you be responsible!

Oh -- and did I mention that 10% of the profits are dedicated to helping women access reproductive care?

So if you are in the type of relationship (or could have a super-short, one-night type of relationship) that requires condoms, you should definitely look into this opportunity to try Sustain condoms for just $2.00!

The Try for $2 program let's us try smaller versions of products before splurging on the full-size version. I'm totally digging it and definitely recommend signing up on their email list to get get notifications when new stuff is added.

Vegan Champagne Options (with prices)

12/29/2014

Picture
If you are gearing up for a New Year's Eve celebration and need vegan champagne to serve your guests, here are the best options I could find (with prices):

Domaine Ste. Michelle

I found this vegan champagne online for between $8.99 and $12.99, so this seem to be the most affordable option.

Korbel Natural

This one usually runs about $14.00 per bottle. The Brut and Extra Dry by Korbel are not vegan.

Dom Perignon

Prices vary greatly (depending on type and vintage); the least expensive bottle I found was on Amazon for $175.00.

Veuve Clicquot

The least expensive option I found when searching online was NV Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label for $60.00 on Amazon.

Moet and Chandon

The bottles you can easily find at liquor stores and grocery stores run around $55.00 to $65.00.

Champagne Fleury

I could not find a price or retailer in the US for this one, but folks in Europe have this vegan champagne option (and I'm sure with more research, you could find it in the US as well).
