1/25/2018

Dollar Store Finds
Look what I found at the 99 Cents Only store yesterday!

In case it is difficult to read, that is a bamboo cutting board made from organic bamboo for only $1.99, a Himalayan pink salt grinder for $.99, and a Himalayan pink salt shaker for $.99.

As you can see in the photo below, this super-cheap Himalayan pink salt is certified non-GMO, kosher, vegan and halal.

I LOVE coming across awesome dollar store finds like these!

As you probably know, inventory can change quickly, so if you are interested in picking up one of these organic bamboo cutting boards or some Himalayan pink salt, get to your local 99 Cents Only store soon!

Have you found any organic or vegan deals at your local dollar stores lately? Let us know in the comments below!

Best Cheap, Vegan Dollar Store Finds Ever! (#vegan #dollarstore #savemoney)

Cheap Vegan Frozen Foods
We can always find some cheap, vegan dollar store finds whenever we go to Dollar Tree or 99 Cents Only stores, but I think these are some of the best plant-based dollar store foods I have ever found!

Buying frozen food is a great way to save money on groceries, but when you can find those frozen foods at the dollar store, you can save even more. All of the vegan dollar store foods in this post can be found in the freezer section at Dollar Tree.

Pictured above are just the ones that I actually bought and brought home, but there were lots more than that (most of which are pictured below).

Let's start with the stuff that is pretty much always in stock, and then we will take a look at some of the veg dollar store goodness I have never seen before.
Dollar Store Frozen Berries
I have found that cheap, frozen fruit is always available at Dollar Tree and sometimes available at 99 Cents Only stores. This is great for smoothies and homemade, non-dairy ice cream, and I always have some of this fruit in my freezer. While I try to buy mostly organic, I just can't pass up $1.00 frozen fruit, particularly since we go through a lot of it for our vegan smoothies.
Dollar Store Smoothies
Frozen vegetables are also among the cheap vegan dollar store finds that you will find at either of the major dollar stores and some local ones. Frozen french fries are almost always in stock, and I didn't get a picture of those, but I did find two frozen sweet potato products that I was pretty excited to see.
Dollar store vegan finds
Sweet potato fries and sweet potato curly fries for just $1.00 each! That is a great price for sweet potato products, and I'm totally bummed that I didn't pick some of these up. I got a little too excited about some of the cheap vegan food that I had never seen at the dollar store before -- and I knew I had limited room in my always-stocked freezer -- but I may have to go back for these!
dollar store frozen vegetables
My local Dollar Tree had a good selection of frozen vegetables this time, including okra, broccoli, mixed vegetables and asparagus. I definitely wish I had picked up some of that cheap asparagus and am probably going to go back to get some before they run out.
dollar tree asparagus
I do not remember seeing asparagus in the freezer section of my local dollar stores before, and asparagus can be pretty expensive, so this is an exciting find!
Frozen Vegan Food at Dollar Tree
If you have not tried these rosemary and garlic fingerling potatoes, I recommend picking some up at your local Dollar Tree! I tried these the last time I saw them in stock and would definitely buy them again.
Dollar Tree Veggie Burgers
Okay, now we are getting to some of the more exciting vegan dollar store finds that I came across on my last visit. We all know that veggie burgers are usually not cheap, but these little two packs of 100% vegetarian veggie burgers are just $1.00 each!

I bought two packs of these, and I tried one last night. The first thing I noticed about them is that you can actually see the vegetables, which is a quality I like in my veggie patties. The recommended preparation method is the oven, but I was in a hurry and threw them in the microwave. They were a tad mushy, but veggie burgers often are when you cook them in the microwave. Other than that, I would say the taste and texture were on par with veggie burgers I have paid a lot more for.
Vegan Dollar Tree Finds
These Jamaican Style Vegetable Patties are another cheap vegan food that I have never noticed at my local dollar stores. I picked up two of them and tried one of them yesterday. The filling reminds me of a samosa, and that is always a good thing. The outside crust is several flaky layers, most of which I easily removed to cut out some calories and gluten.

I think these might be a particularly good choice for college students going back to school and looking for a vegan, dorm-room alternative to Hot Pockets!
Cheap Vegan Foods
I have not had the chance to try these frozen, battered mushrooms yet, but I am a big fan of mushrooms in almost any form, so I can't wait! I see these as a super-cheap finger food for a party or an indulgent movie-night snack.
Vegan Green Bean Fries
Vegan Green Bean Fries
To surprise me even more, they had not one but TWO kinds of green bean fries. I bought one of each to give them both a try, but have not had a chance yet. I think I'm going to make these and the mushrooms the next time I binge watch Netflix!

Of course, I will bake them with no oil to make them not quite as sinful!
Vegan Dollar Tree Finds
You can't go wrong with zucchini fries, so I bought two boxes of these. My wife is a huge fan of fried zucchini and is an omnivore, so I'm interested in seeing what she thinks of these vegan zucchini fries. I don't think she will notice a difference, and I'm sure she is going to love them! I just can't believe I found them at the Dollar Tree!
Cheap Frozen Vegan Foods
Of all of the cheap, vegan dollar store finds I found on this trip, these vegetable empanadas tempted me the most. You saw all of those products I did buy, and I just didn't think that my body could handle any more gluten any time soon. So if any of you do buy these at your local Dollar Tree, let me know how they taste! I'm super curious -- they look so good!

What are some of the best cheap, vegan foods you have found at dollar stores in your area?

Printable Online Coupons and Money-Saving Tips to Save on Christmas Dinner!

12/9/2014

If you will be making special dishes and cooking for extra folks this holiday season, you may be concerned about your grocery bill going up for the month. So this is just a quick post to remind you that you can cut down on expenses and save money on groceries by buying bulk, keeping an eye on store sales and using coupons!

Here are 10 quick tips for saving money on food during the holidays:

1. If you will be shopping at Whole Foods for vegan, organic or gluten-free fare, visit their website for printable coupons first. When you get to the store, stop at the entrance to grab their circular, which also has lots of coupons.

2. Visit CommonKindness.com before you go shopping to look for rare coupons on healthier finds. As a bonus, they will donate to a charity you choose every time you use one of their printable coupons.

3. Check my RedPlum printable coupons page for money-saving coupons on basic supplies and pantry essentials.

4. If you need inexpensive frozen foods, hit up the Dollar Tree. They almost always have frozen fruits and vegetables (sometimes they are even organic!), and they take manufacturer's coupons.

5. If you need inexpensive produce and are not necessarily looking for organic options, some 99 Cents Only Stores have pretty impressive produce sections.

6. Keep an eye on those store sales circulars that come in the mail or in your newspaper. Lots of stores have great sales on items commonly included in holiday meals. (Couple this with coupons to save even more.)

7. If you are on the hunt for money-saving online coupons, check out
Coupons.com when planning your next shopping trip. They often have a surprising number of organic, vegetarian, gluten-free or vegan coupons.

8. It is not too late to order healthy foods online for big discounts! I don't think it has ever taken more than about three days to get my orders from Vitacost -- and they are always having big sales on healthy foods and personal care products.

9. Visit the Where to Find Vegan Coupons page for lots of tips on where you can find organic coupons, gluten-free coupons, vegetarian coupons and more!

10. If you have a Winco or other grocery store with a good bulk section, this is a great (and cheap) way to stock up on baking flours, rice, beans, spices, nuts, cereals, oats, pastas and more. My local Winco has gluten-free pasta, gluten-free flours, organic quinoa, organic rice and lots of other healthy options that can help you keep your family and friends well fed!

Healthy Dollar Store Finds: 16.9oz O.N.E. Coconut Water - 3 for 99 Cents!

This is such an awesome find -- I couldn't wait to share it with y'all!!

I found these 16.9oz O.N.E. coconut waters for three for 99 cents at one of the 99 Cents Only stores in Ventura yesterday. If you have a dollar store near you, you should definitely stop by and see if they have any in stock. This is an amazing deal!

As I've mentioned before, I have a pesky neuro disorder for which I find loading up on potassium very helpful. In fact, I drink like three of these every day, so you can imagine how expensive that can get. Fortunately, I have had great luck finding these great deals at dollar stores and stocking up on cheap coconut water ever time I do (I bought 40 this time!).

I also use them in the potassium-packed smoothies I make a few times each week.

They are not always in stock, so get to your local dollar store soon to see if they have any!

Best Dollar Store Deal Yet: Mason Jars with To-Go Lids and Straws!

9/27/2013

Picture
This is definitely one of the best dollar store deals I have found!

I found these mason jars with to-go lids and straws at the Camarillo 99 Cents Only store yesterday. What a great find! And it's even more exciting that the lids are just metal - no BPA-laden white liner on the inside!

While similar lids are available online, the cheapest I have seen them is about $7.00 -- and that is without a handled mason jar.

Ultimately, I want to move towards only using stainless steel straws, but this was a such a great deal - and I've been looking for a good deal on these for so long - that I could not pass them up!

I checked the Ventura 99 Cents Only stores on Victoria Avenue and Main Street and didn't find any there, but I left a few on the shelf in Camarillo - so hurry over to get them, or check your local dollar store to see if they have any in stock!

Vegan Dollar Store Find: Flax Seed Meal #plantstrong #dollarstore #vegetarian #glutenfree

Picture
This is another one of those vegan dollar store deals that we are finding at the Thousand Oaks 99 Cent Only Store, but have not seen at the Ventura or Camarillo stores, so it may be the case that only some dollar stores have this in stock right now.

This is just a fraction of the price that we see flax seed meal going for at conventional grocery stores, so if you have a dollar store in your area, it is definitely worth checking out!

I mostly use ground flax seeds as a smoothie addition to boost the fiber and omega 3 content, and as an egg replacer for baking.

How do you use ground flax seeds in your plant-based diet? Let us know in the comments below!

Vegan Dollar Store Find: Earth Balance Vegan "White Cheddar" Puffs #plantstrong #vegetarian

I was pretty excited to find vegan goodness by such a well-known company at the 99 Cents Only Store in Camarillo the other day, so I had to share it with you! I'd never had these Earth Balance Vegan Aged White Cheddar Flavor Puffs before, but you know I had to get them with all those symbols on the bag saying things like "gluten-free" and "plant-based diet friendly" and  "non-GMO."

Who could resist, right?

This is one of the things I love about dollar store shopping: I get to try new things that I probably would not have purchased at regular retail prices.

And I always seem to find some new vegan dollar store deal just about every time I go shopping.

I was so excited about this particular find that I bought five bags!

Vegan Dollar Store Finds: Sensibly Natural Veggie Chips #plantstrong #vegetarian

I often find these Veggie Chips by Sensibly Natural at the Dollar Tree. They were there on my last shopping trip, so I figured I would grab a bag to add to the blog.

At just a buck and with less fat than conventional potato chips, these are a pretty good vegan junk food option for folks who like crunchy snacks.

I eat these with hummus and love them, but they are still mostly potato, so I try not to eat them too often!

Dollar Store Deals: ZICO Coconut Water $1.00 for One Liter!

This is one dollar store deal that really got me excited!

We can pretty regularly find 11-ounce, flavored coconut waters at the 99 Cents Only Store, but this is the first time I've seen a full one-liter container there.

Actually, I can't take credit for this awesome find for plant-strong folks -- V, my partner, found these at the Thousand Oaks 99 Cents Only Store when she stopped there to pick up some other groceries for me.

I went to the Ventura store afterwards to see if I could get more, and I didn't see them there. That could mean that only some stores are carrying them or that they were just sold out in Ventura before I got there.

Next time you head over to your local dollar store for some vegan, vegetarian or organic goodness, be sure to look for these!

If you find some, let us know in the comments below!

Vegan Dollar Store Finds: Silk Iced Latte, Seaweed Snacks and More!

6/24/2013

I have been having some great luck finding cheap vegan and natural foods at my local dollar stores.

On my last visit to the 99 Cent Store in Ventura, I found two things that I thought might be of particular interest to y'all...

These Silk Iced Latte drinks in vanilla and mocha...
Picture
And these seaweed snacks from Annie Chun's All Natural Asian Cuisine...
Picture
I've eaten seaweed in soups and such but had never had the snacks before. This is one of the things I love about finding natural, organic or veg products at the dollar store -- it makes it so much easier (and cheaper!) to try new things that I might not have tried if I had to pay regular retail prices.

Here are some other things I regularly find at Dollar Tree and the 99 Cent Store that go well with a plant-based diet:

Organic canned beans
Canned vegetables
Bagged rice
Bagged dry beans
Potato chips
Tortilla chips
Frozen berries
Frozen fruit
Frozen vegetables
Coconut water
Flax seeds (whole and meal)
Soy milk
Condiments
Tea bags
Bagged salads
Fresh produce (at the 99 Cent Store)

If you have some sort of dollar store in your area, definitely check it out! It makes it so much easier to eat a plant-based diet or to be vegan on a budget!

If you are a dollar store shopper, what natural, organic, vegetarian or vegan awesomeness have you found there? Let us know in the comments below!
